Substitution of Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (endocrine disruptor and toxic for reproduction) used in citrus waxing

A study was carried out within the scope of a project carried out by CCOO for the prevention of toxic hazards for reproduction, pregnancy and breast-feeding at the workplace. The study analyzed several chemicals used during the storage, distribution and handling of citrus. Union experts detected that the waxing compound used for oranges contained Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (endocrine disruptor and toxic for reproduction). The product was eventually substituted by an alternative wax with a similar composition containing methyl silicone resin.
